March 16, 2010

Spring Design is announcing today that their dual screen Alex eReader has gone on sale via their website at www.springdesign.com. For $399, customers can pick up the eReader that supports EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats.  According to Spring Design, -orders are expected to start shipping out no later than mid-April. Weighing less than 1 pound (11 oz), the Alex measures 4.7″ X 8.9″ and features a 6″ EPD (Electronic Paper Display) screen and a full color 3.5″ Android-based LCD.  Users can download or add their own content to a microSD card as the Alex supports up to 32GB cards.  WiFi and USB 2.0 connections allow for future updates. While the EPD screen provides easy reading of ebooks and text, the LCD screen allows for more dynamic functions, like video and web browsing.  Users can also annotate and highlight what they are reading, or link to relevant audio, video, and web pages.  The Duet Navigator lets owners view content on both screens at once. Spring Design’s  LinkNotes lets authors insert hyperlinks in their books, periodicals, and documents  that show up on the EPD.  The end user can then click on these links and then pull up relevant web-based information or multimedia to help take the reading experience beyond simple words.  Down the road, tools like these will be handy for teachers and professors looking to provide study notes and more to an already-existing textbook.
