Google announces pay on the go with Android payment Chrome extension

Google has announced a new Chrome extension that makes it possible to ring up clients via their Android phones, using your computer. Here’s a scenario, straight from Google: Imagine you’re selling at a market or expo and want to take credit cards. Rather than hassle with cash, you can use the new Android Payment Extension for the Google Checkout Store Gadget on your laptop to allow Checkout customers to purchase from their phones. The way it works is this: the merchant, having a laptop, would “ring up” the client via their browser. The extension would then generate a QR code that the client could scan with their phone, taking them straight to Google Checkout with their items shown, totaled and ready for purchase. While this payment system may sound great for on-the-go drug dealers, we prefer to think people would use it for legit reasons, such as flea markets and outside booths. This looks pretty streamlined and simple to use, which is what Google’s portfolio is built on. Sprint to Launch Froyo “In the Near Future”

Via their announcement blog, Sprint just announced that it plans to launch Android 2.2 in the near future, and while the post sounds like they mean that it will be available for phones yet to launch, their announcement specifically mentions the Evo 4G as receiving the upgrade. Sadly, it was confirmed via comments that there are no plans to bring 2.2 to the Hero or the Moment, so we will have to rely on the mod community for that. But at least we know that their new Android phones, and the Evo, will be up-to-date. HTC Magic to Receive Android 2.2 According to SFR

Second-ranked French carrier SFR has announced that the HTC Magic will receive an update to Android 2.2 (Froyo) later this summer along with another of their Android phones, the Nexus One . This shouldn’t come as too much of a shocker considering the Magic’s US counterpart, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G , has also been pegged as a device that should be receiving the anticipated OS update . There is no word whether this update will be coming to all Magic owners or merely those on SFR, but chances are if it’s ready for prime time France won’t be the only place seeing it. No word on when the HTC Wildfire and HTC Legend might see a similar update on SFR, but HTC has promised that their newest smartphones should all be receiving the update in due time. HTC Has To Pay Microsoft To Use Android?

This came completely out of left field. Microsoft made a few claims that HTC infringed on a few of their patents. HTC obviously agreed that they did and will now pay royalties to not only Google but Microsoft as well to use Android on their handsets. Microsoft and HTC have had a long standing business relationship. The best WinMo devices come from HTC, that’s what makes this move by Microsoft so odd. Maybe they want to slow down Android in any way they can? There is no mention on which Microsoft patents HTC violated with their Android phones. HTC clearly agreed to pay because they are currently locked into a battle with Apple over various patents. This move may cause the price of future Android handsets from HTC to go up. Either way I’m sure they will continue to make awesome yet affordable Android devices. “HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial collaboration, and today’s agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercial arrangements that address intellectual property,” Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft, said in the official statement. “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with HTC.” [via wmexperts ]

HTC to Pay Microsoft Royalties on Android Phones
As we predicted in March , Microsoft has strong-armed HTC into signing a licensing agreement to pay Microsoft royalties for HTC’s Android phones. The good news here is that an Apple-style lawsuit is unlikely now that HTC has agreed to cough up the money. The bad news is that we’ll all be paying Microsoft a bit for each HTC Android phone we buy. This is the latest in a string of licensing agreements Microsoft has reached with companies that use Linux-based code, which Microsoft claims to hold patents on. Since no one to date has challenged Microsoft on these claims, it’s unclear whether they would hold up in court. Might We Suggest… Will Microsoft Hold Android Hostage? Right now, we’re all worrying about Apple’s patent claims against HTC, but Android may face a similar attack from Microsoft. It’s not terribly well known that Microsoft claims that it owns signific…

Motorola Scrapping MOTOBLUR in Favor of HTC Sense UI
It looks like Google isn’t the only one looking to address Android fragmentation. Word on the street is that Motorola has scrapped future MOTOBLUR plans in favor of (wait for it) HTC’s Sense UI. Now we understand why there’s been a rather long delay in getting handsets like the T-Mobile Cliq updated to Android 2.1. According to sources familiar with the matter, the handset maker had been mulling this over right around the time the Espresso screens leaked. They (Motorola) realized it would be in their best interest to adopt their (HTC) build rather than compete head to head. As part of the deal, HTC has agreed to integrate some of the MOTOBLUR widgets into Sense UI with added customization. Further, the remote wipe and backup features will be included in future builds of Sense. Looking back, we can’t say we’re surprised. Remember seeing Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha at the release of the Nexus One? Apparently that’s when official talks started between the two. It started out as a light joke right before Chou took the stage. Afterward, the two shared a few drinks and got the ball rolling. Thanks for the heads up ArlosPiflo! You tell us! Rumor: Verizon’s Nexus One Due by End of Next Week (With a Surprise)
SoftSailor is reporting that one of their most trusted tipsters claims the Nexus One will hit Verizon Wireless by the end of next week. We’ve been hearing things like “soon” and “any day now” for a while, but this is perhaps the most definitive window yet. In a related note, jkOnTheRun is reporting that the Nexus One will arrive with something the other version(s) don’t have. Being that we’re talking Verizon, we could guess this means Skype Mobile will preloaded. However, there are plenty of other fun things to consider. We’d like to hear from you – What do you think Verizon’ version of the Nexus One will have different from the T-Mobile iteration? Lower price? Flash? Sense UI? Available in retail stores? No Surprise: Google Offers Carriers Rev Sharing
March 26, 2010 by MrAndroid

The concept that Google offers revenue sharing to carriers who have Google Apps pre-installed on their Android Phones has recently been brought to light by PaidContent.org and created quite the fuss over the interwebz. Why? I’m not quite sure. For some reason the move is being explained as if its some sort of sneaky, undermining system . You could make that point… but it would be absolutely ludicrous. Android is a FREE and OPEN system that anyone can use on their devices and we’ve seen PLENTY of folks build hardware that don’t even have a TRACE of Google. Want to include Android Market? No problem, we’ll even share revenue with you Want to include Google Apps? We’d like that very much, and we’ll even share revenue with you Want to work with another partner, like Yahoo, who will outbid us and have THEIR services pre-packaged on your devices for a set fee or a revenue sharing system? Be our guest – we’ll keep working on the Operating System itself so your Yahooified phone is the best it can be Google was negotiating default search placement in mobile phones WELL before Android was on the table. They do it with the iPhone. They’ve done it with feature phones. Heck, they’ve done it with your desktop browser known as Mozilla Firefox. In fact, I’m looking at this from a completely different angle than most people: if Google has to “bid” for default placement on phones with THEIR OWN operating system, then obviously they’re playing the “Open” game fair. Much more fair than Palm who claim they want to open things up but don’t allow any other manufacturers to touch their “secret sauce”. So just a fair warning when you’re reading all these reports from across the web – don’t be surprised that Google is offering carriers money to include Google Apps on their Android Phones. Not only is this pretty much standard operating procedure, but it shows that Android is probably a lot more transparent than its critics give it credit for.

Kyocera Zio M6000 Smartphone
Following the saying “The more the merrier,” I am pleased to announce that Kyocera revealed the launch of a new Kyocera (and Sanyo) branded Android device at CTIA 2010 today. The Kyocera Zio M6000 will be released in Q2. There are not many details yet on the Zio (pronounced Z? -O), but from the press release we know it will have a 3.5 inch WVGA screen, a 3.2 MP camera with 30fps video recording/playback and a dedicated camera key. A surprisingly small amount (only 256MB) of internal memory is added to the expected microSD slot (up to 32 GB). It will also have, like most Android devices, a light sensor, accelerometer, media player, Google Maps and a web browser. The phone is using CDMA2000 and right now there is no information on carriers or price. The press release mentions Google Goggles, so it is fair to assume it will have at least Android 1.6, if not better. I think 2.1 should be mandatory. Might We Suggest… Around the Androidosphere: CTIA Edition There doesn’t seem to be a shortage of Android news any longer! After going months with little to report on, action packed weeks like this one are what we’ve been waiting for!
