Desire and Legend Rooted Already

Well, looks like it has happened again. Modaco, the same guy that rooted the Nexus One before it was released, just achieved root on the Desire and Legend before they have been released. HTC must’ve gotten wind of this because they are now working on an update to the Desire’s firmware which will most likely patch this exploit before it is released. Modaco is likely working on custom ROM’s for both devices and porting them to other devices. It shouldn’t be long before we have a perfect Sense UI ROM for our Nexus One’s. I’m sure the OTA was already in the making but the reason above seems cooler. [via twitter ]

(Cross-posted with the Google translate blog ) For millennia man and animal have tolerantly coexisted, separated by language and the development of opposable thumbs. Today we can proudly say that we have overcome one of those hurtles. Presenting Google Translate for Animals , a new application available in Android Market. This application allows you to record animal sounds and have the sounds analyzed and translated by Google Translate into any of the 52 supported languages. With animal translation you can finally understand why Spot keeps peeing in your closet or why Pickles keeps leaving dead mice in the tub. No longer must humanity struggle to comprehend when Lassie warns, “Hurry, Timmy’s fallen down the well!” The technology isn’t perfect yet, so you may discover some translations that don’t make perfect sense. The algorithms are always improving however, thanks to the large corpus of cute cat videos that have been uploaded to YouTube. We think that this is an exciting step in understanding and communicating with the world around us. Stay tuned for the addition of “old car” and “stomach” to the translation capabilities of the application this summer. 3 UK HTC Desire arrives April 20th

UK carrier 3 have announced that they’ll be the next network to offer the HTC Desire , with the Android 2.1 smartphone arriving on Tuesday April 20th. Priced from free on a £35 monthly agreement or £349.99 on pay-as-you-go, the Desire will be initially sold as a generic device with the 3-branded version rocking up on May 3rd. However, apparently 3 users of either the generic or branded Desires will be able to download 3’s apps from the Android Market and use them as normal, so unless you particularly want the carrier’s logo on your phone there’s no reason to wait. Upgrades for existing customers are also available, of course, though you’ll have to ring customers services to find out exactly how much it might set you back. If you’re still undecided on the HTC Desire, head over to our full review of the handset at SlashGear . Vodafone’s version hits the UK on April 8th and is already available for preorder, while T-Mobile are apparently already shipping their version. HTC Desire vs. Google Nexus One;

Touchnote hiring developer for incoming Android app

Looks like Touchnote – who offer an easy way to take digital photos and send them as personalised greetings cards or postcards through old-fashioned snail mail – are keeping their promise to deliver an Android version of their mobile app. The company has just announced it’s looking for an Android developer for a 4-6 week project. Touchnote is looking for an Android developer to join the team for a 4-6 week project starting as soon as possible. We’re in the exciting phase of working with a major client and need additional team resource for the project. If you’re interested please get in touch with me, ed[@]touchnote.com. Mobile: 07825 841098 Touchnote’s normal service requires that you upload your photos to their website and enter addresses and messages on there. However they also have two mobile applications – for iPhone and Symbian S60 – which allow you to snap a photo with your phone, create a card and pay for it, all on the handset itself. I’ve actually used Touchnote before – though only the desktop version – and it works ridiculously simply. Prices kick off at £0.99 ($1.50) for a postcard, £1.99 ($3.00) for a card with fold-out flaps that work as stands, and £2.99 ($4.54) for a traditional greetings card. I’ve been pestering them for an Android version of the mobile app, so it’s great to see one is in the pipeline. Any developers out there interested in helping them out? [ via Mobile Industry Review]

Review of the Thousand Dollar Android Phone – Sony Xperia X10

This morning I received the Fed Ex package that said overnight but I felt like it was over a year of waiting as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone was finally in my hands. I have been talking about this phone in anticipation from when I first started speaking at conferences in early 2009 on topics such as Android at SMX Advanced last year. This pent up demand is accentuated with reported selling price of $1000 via Amazon for unlocked Sony Xperia X10s since this phone is not expected to be available in the United States until possibly the later half of 2010. So I quickly opened the Sony X10a box labeled Sensuous Black which along with the phone itself had a smart setup in that the USB cable connects into a socket adapter, so you don’t need 2 separate wires, plus a quality pair of Sony earbuds that included an extender with the mic & button. Thankfully the ear buds and connector are with the 3.5mm plug versus the USB connection. Oddly the X10 had the USB connection with the peel off lid and the 3.5 headphone jack on the top of the phone instead of on the bottom (as well ditching the USB connection lid). Strangely as well this is the first smartphone I have seen with the volume button on the right side when its facing you. So I compared it to the other Android phones I had which are the G1 and the Google Ion ( Google I/O version of the MyTouch 3G ) with these differentiator bullet points The X10 is about the height of the G1 but half the depth The X10 is thinner than the Ion but noticeably heavier The X10 screen is massive and the size of the entire Google Ion The X10 screen with the SnapDragon processor is great for video The X10 screen also helps avoid fat fingering the onscreen keyboard The X10 8.1 MP camera is better than most digital cameras I have used Yes, the X10 was loaded with Android 1.6 & lacks multitouch Oddly what I really missed was not having the trackball on the X10 The X10 boot time blew away both the G1 & Ion at under 30 seconds Both the Google Ion & G1 took about 2 minutes to cold boot Those were the main initial comparisons from my first day with the Sony Ericsson X10 as I will expand on this review in posts later this week on another site. These X10 review posts will be done as part of the debut of Mobile Martin where I will be posting on mobile marketing in general along with SEO & project management tips advice and opinions. GoogleAndBlog itself will be making some major changes beginning in April with more robust & timely Android news along with some major site improvements that the readers of GAB deserve. Stars in mobile search

Earlier this month on the Official Google Blog, we announced how stars make search more personal by allowing you to mark and rediscover your favorite content. Today, we are extending this feature so that you can get to your favorite content on your phone, anytime, anywhere. For example, if you previously searched for “car reviews” and starred a few sites that were useful while researching cars on your computer, searching for “car reviews” on your phone will allow you to rediscover your starred items. If there are additional results that you want to star while on mobile, simply click the star marker beside the result, and you will be able to see it later when searching from your computer or phone. To try this yourself, go to google.com on your phone’s browser, sign in to your Google Account and do a search. Star a few results and then do the search again to see your starred items appear at the top of your results. To see the same starred items between computer and phone, make sure you are signed in to the same account. The stars in search functionality is currently supported on Android phones, iPhones/iPods, and Palm WebOS devices in the US. Posted by Zhen Wang, Google Mobile Engineering Team
