Bark Bark Woof: Google Translate For Animals Hits Android Market!

Ever want to know what your dog is “saying” when they bark? Or how about your cat when it purrs? Or maybe you’re a cowboy who wants to know what every neigh means. Now you can – introducing Google Translate for Animals (An April Fools Day joke of course): Funny as all hell if you ask me. Google REALLY put some time into this joke, as there is actually an Android Application on Android Market! Pretty insane, hilarious, and insanely hilarious. Here are a few of the outputs I got when translating Dogs, Birds, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Tortoises, Horses, Chicken, Sheep, Donkeys and Pigs into English: “My, what a day I’ve had. How was yours?” “Testing, testing, one two one two.” “Seriously, what’s with the stick thing? It’s getting old” “My goodness, I am looking hot today” “I dropped some food around here somewhere” Let us know your personal favorites… Right on, Google . [Thanks Carl!]

iPad Wont Save The Flash

As the Apple iPad nears its launch on Saturday April 3rd, 2010 I thought this comic from FoxTrot was a clever twist on the iPad promises. As opposed to the huge head-start Apple had in the smartphone race there are many Android tablets already out & more upcoming that are more powerful & cheaper but without the Apple price premium. Apple believes that the iPad is something that will save publishing and the news media while also self serving themselves with another monopolistic app monetization gravy train. Apple is just looking to avoid any competition holes in the feeding trough by preventing Flash . This FoxTrot comic calls out publicly the lack of Flash support before the iPad launch to remind all those that sold out on the preorder who its really helping. iPad Wont Save The Flash Post from: Google And Blog

Obama For Android

Even though Obama plays favorites when it comes to sports teams, this article isn’t about the United States President lobbying for a particular mobile OS. Although us phandroids would love the added support, this is all about Android owners being able to follow and support the Obama administration. You may know that Obama has tried to bring an unprecedented amount of information about his office’s happenings to the American public, and this app streams all of it to you in one easy place – your Android device! It promises to include: Live updates from twitter The latest photos from flickr The latest blog posts YouTube videos of the president And I’m sure much more. Even if you don’t like Obama – heck, I know there are plenty of Republicans out there who HATE him – at least you’ll be up to date on the latest reasons to diss him. You’ll just have to disguise yourself by putting the app in a folder called “Limbaugh” or something like that.

Bump You, Pay Me (PayPal For Android)

iPhone owners have the distinct pleasure of settling debts via PayPal on their phones, simply by “bumping” their phones together. It’s a pretty darn cool feature and one you should not be jealous of, because its on the way to Android shortly. And by shortly they mean the next 2 or 3 months – at least that’s what they told CNET . There are two main things I’m wondering: Will the app allow you to bump an Android Phone and iPhone for cross-platform payment? Why don’t more people have PayPal? I know that statistically a LOT of people do have PayPal. But recently I’ve wanted to pay some friends back for random events/nights/etc… and when they don’t live nearby I’ve mentioned “I’ll just PayPal you”. Nope, I won’t, because they don’t have an account. I think us tech obsessors are MUCH more likely to have a PayPal account, even if we’ve only used it once or twice in the past decade. I’m hoping more people sign up because this seems like a ridiculously easy way to settle debts, even if its something as simple as sitting at a restaurant and working out the bill or being at a baseball game or concert and evening out ticket prices and concessions. But alas, there will always be a group of people who think PayPal and Bump Payments are a HORRIBLE idea. And there is a very specific name for that group… MOOCHERS! Extra credit for whoever gets what movie this article’s title is a pun about – no need to share the quote – with both hands on the keyboard I don’t have any earmuffs handy.

Order Food From Your Phone With SnapFinger

Sit back, relax, and stuff your face with the food you just easily ordered with SnapFinger- an application recently launched on the Android Market. By partnering with a fairly large number of national food chains and tapping into their Point-Of-Sale system, they’re not only able to show users local restaurants based on their GPS location but also the menu and pricing. Add an option to buy and have your food delivered/picked up and you’ve got a pretty handy app! Here is a quick demo that IntoMobile got at CTIA: Right before starting the demo the SnapFinger rep says: “Since my Android Phone just died, I’ll take you to the iPhone, which is a little bit slower than the Android. But you’ll get the idea.” Those are words I like to hear, and as far as battery drain, he was using both all day and the iPhone battery was low too. But back to the app – it was already available on the iPhone, Palm Pre and other platforms and just made its way to Android. The company obviously wanted to sprawl themselves out as wide as possible so going with chains as an initial strategy was a smart idea. Some of the restaurants included are: Applebees Baha Fresh Boston Market Bulldog Deli California Pizza Kitchen Outback Steakhouse Moe’s Subway Tony Roma’s I think mobile phone food orders represents a huge opportunity, but obviously, the more participating restaurants you have the more likely you’ll succeed and larger barrier to entry you’ll create for your competitors. The time to gain that advantage is now, and it looks like SnapFinger has a great start. Ordering food on your phone – have you done it or not? [Via Press Release ( PDF )]

BlockBuster Android Application In The Works

I feel bad for BlockBuster, I truly do. Most of it is for selfish nostalgic reasons: I can remember walking to the local shopping center with parents and/or buddies, finding a VHS – or later on DVD – bringing it home, popping it in, and watching a good PG-13 movie. At the time I thought my mom was ruining my life for not allowing me to watch Rated R movies. But luckily- I also had friends with those little “black boxes” that got everything Rated R and a couple levels beyond if ya know wh- Sorry, back on topic. BlockBuster is $1 billion in debt but they’re not done trying to reach their hand out of the grave that Netflix help dig – they’re now offering On-Demand video on T-Mobile’s HTC HD2 and will soon be launching an Android application. BlockBuster signed an agreement with Warner Brothers and Time Warner that will deliver content through the BlockBuster application a month before competitors like Netflix and Redbox have access. What that will cost them? I have no clue. What that will mean with handsets that deliver HDMI-Video out? Probably nothing if Google TV becomes a reality you could just snag the application on there! The move is definitely a good one though as BlockBuster needs to do some forward thinking, innovating in an area that won’t soon go the way of the VHS. If you ask me, Netflix should be similarly concerned as the connected home becomes more and more of a reality and within 5 years I’m thinking some sweeping changes will occur. Why get a DVD in the mail when you can download a movie online and watch it directly on your TV? To be fair, Netflix IS doing some of this stuff now. But BlockBuster? I’m not sure if they can survive, especially in the face of competition that has zoomed past them with more modern solutions to the home-movie-goers needs. Luckily we have awesome readers who know EXACTLY what the fate of BlockBuster will be. Too little too late if you ask me. View Poll [Via CNN Money ]
