Skype Android app for Verizon Available Thursday

Skype and Verizon announced at CTIA that a Skype Mobile app will be available in the Android market beginning Thursday, March 25, for users of the Droid, Droid Eris, and Devour on Verizon. The app is not the VOIP app you might be imagining: it relies on Verizon’s voice network to connect calls. The app will allow users to: make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls send and receive unlimited IMs with other Skype users manage their Skype contact list within the app make international calls at Skype’s calling rates. The two companies announced they’d be partnering on this project earlier this month . This week’s announcement gives us more specific information about the timing of release (this week!) and the features of the app. A Skype representative was noncommittal when asked if or when they might bring a pure VOIP app to Android, and I believe I read a big, fat “nope” between the lines, especially given their more positive noncommittal response to other inquiries. If you’re a Verizon customer who uses Skype, let us know what you think about the app once you’ve had the chance to try it out. If you use the Skype Lite app that was available more generally in the Market, know that if you uninstall it, it’ll be gone forever: Skype has pulled it from the market . And if you’re interested in using a VOIP service on your Android phone, your best bet might be to check out other apps like Fring or Tubaloo . Sprint’s Android 2.1 Updates Due in “Coming Weeks”
Samsung Moment and HTC Hero owners will be excited to learn that Sprint plans to roll Android 2.1 out to their customers in the “coming weeks”. As the carrier gears up for the Nexus One and, presumably, the HTC Supersonic, subscribers will soon have their pick of cutting edge phones and hardware form factors. You can barely make it out, but the image above says that more information will be coming in April. Here’s hoping Sprint handles the 2.1 rollout better more efficiently than Motorola and Verizon have with the Droid. Verizon Nexus One Only Available Online, Sense UI? Doubt It
Android Central has gotten hold of a picture showing the Nexus One in Verizon Wireless’ Equipment Guide. The description clearly states that the phone will ONLY be sold through Google’s phone website , as previously speculated. This confirms that Google will continue pushing people towards online phone shopping, and stick with its current strategy to change the way phones are purchased. The strange thing about the picture above is the mention of Sense UI as a feature of the phone. However, I wouldn’t get too excited about it. People are just so careless these days when writing up spec sheets. We can probably chalk it up to a typo, since we know Google only wants to sell “Google Experience” devices on their site. My first thought was the possibility of the Incredible being Verizon’s Nexus One; but then I realized how dumb that sounded and how pissed off Verizon’s customers would be were that the case. The Incredible’s specs are also rumored to be completely different. Sources say the phone will have 6GB of internal storage, along with 1GB of RAM. The Nexus One only has 512MB/512MB. In any case, both phones are coming soon. Now, all we have to do is wait. Vodafone UK Showing Nexus One “Coming Soon”
Back when the Nexus One was launched, the Google store listed a placeholder for Vodafone and Verizon with a “Spring 2010″ launch. With the season technically kicking off next Saturday, Vodafone appears to be getting ready to offer the HTC super phone. The carrier’s website now lists the handset as “coming soon” which has us wondering whether or not they’ll offer it through their own channel in addition to Google’s. We’ve recently heard similar things about Verizon so we’d not be surprised. Then again, how else will Google get their store built out and start changing buying habits if they are only another option instead of the option? Thanks for the heads up Martin! Might We Suggest… Nexus One Hitting Verizon, Vofadone Shortly Since the day that the Nexus One was announced, Verizon and Vodafone customers have been anxiously awaiting the super phone on their respective networks. T-Mobile’s Voice Plus Beta Has Started
After nearly a month of waiting, T-Mobile has started their Voice Plus Beta program for G1 owners. Emails are being sent out this evening to those of you who signed up to participate in a new service to manage calls and voicemail on your Android phone. Heads up! To install the application on your phone, you will need to update the G1′s software, wiping your phone in the process. T-Mobile does provide a few steps to walk you through the process so you can backup your data. If you run into any snags, you’re advised to not call Customer Care. Dialing 611 will not do you a bit of good. Instead, users are directed to specific channel s for feedback and troubleshooting. Features of Voice Plus Beta: Call Divert: Carve out a little peace and quiet by sending selected numbers straight to voicemail without ringing your phone. Call Defer: Let callers know you’re busy and schedule a convenient time for you to call them back. Send them a text message that acknowledges their call and that you will respond at a later time. Visual Voicemail: Easily manage your voicemail! View a list of who left a voicemail, with the time of the message and its length. Choose which to listen to now and which to review later. City ID: Get more information about the calls you receive. The city and state information of incoming calls is displayed.
