Touchnote hiring developer for incoming Android app

Looks like Touchnote – who offer an easy way to take digital photos and send them as personalised greetings cards or postcards through old-fashioned snail mail – are keeping their promise to deliver an Android version of their mobile app.  The company has just announced it’s looking for an Android developer for a 4-6 week project. Touchnote is looking for an Android developer to join the team for a 4-6 week project starting as soon as possible. We’re in the exciting phase of working with a major client and need additional team resource for the project. If you’re interested please get in touch with me, ed[@]touchnote.com. Mobile: 07825 841098 Touchnote’s normal service requires that you upload your photos to their website and enter addresses and messages on there.  However they also have two mobile applications – for and Symbian S60 – which allow you to snap a photo with your , create a card and pay for it, all on the handset itself. I’ve actually used Touchnote before – though only the desktop version – and it works ridiculously simply.  Prices kick off at £0.99 ($1.50) for a postcard, £1.99 ($3.00) for a card with fold-out flaps that work as stands, and £2.99 ($4.54) for a traditional greetings card.  I’ve been pestering them for an Android version of the mobile app, so it’s great to see one is in the pipeline.  Any developers out there interested in helping them out? 4G, Front Facing Cam, HDMI Out Get Dev Help From Sprint

March 24, 2010 by MrAndroid

The Sprint EVO 4G has a few features that no other mainstream Android Phones have: 4G connectivity, a front facing camera for video chat, and HDMI Video Out. Unfortunately, current versions of Android don’t these features in terms of developer tools/information. Until they do, Sprint has bridged the gap by offering an EVO 4G Developer Guide ( PDF LINK ) on their Android Developer Site that helps Android tap into these hot new features. A small snippet/example: We’re sure the Android Team is working hard to incorporate support for these features – Sprint merely wants to make sure developers have access PRIOR to launch so that some EVO-ready apps are waiting to take advantage of the phone’s unique features. Get crackin’ devs!

Sprint SDK for HTC EVO 4G teaches devs to use front video cam, HDMI, more

In among the WiMAX excitement, the HTC EVO 4G ’s front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera perhaps didn’t get the fanfare it deserves.  A for an Android device, the camera paves the way for video calls; problem is, Android as it stands isn’t friendly.  Happily Sprint – a member of the OHA, as they’ll happily remind you – is stepping up with a new 4G developer guide intended to show Android devs how to deal with the EVO 4G’s capabilities. A Sprint 4G developer guide is available today from the Sprint ADP Web site  http://developer.sprint.com . The Sprint 4G developer guide explains how to develop on an Android 2.1 handset and how to take advantage of 4G and unique hardware/software capabilities, including how to use a forward-facing camera in an app; how to use HDMI output; and how to build in network detection (3G, 4G or Wi-Fi) to optimize quality of data in an app. The Sprint 4G developer also will include sample apps and source code that highlight these features. It will supplement the Android 2.1 SDK As well as the front-facing camera – the higher than normal resolution of which seems intended for bandwidth-heavy video-over-IP chats than it does regular cellular video calling – the new guide addresses the HDMI output and network identification.  The latter is particularly important, as it gives an app the ability to differentiate between 3G, 4G and WiFi networks, and potentially adjust data use accordingly.  For instance, a streaming media app – such as Sling Player – could automatically increase video resolution when it knows it’s on a 4G versus a 3G connection. The SDK and other tools – together with guides and other development details – are available here .  For more on the HTC EVO 4G, meanwhile, check out our hands-on video .

Free Developer Phones Begin To Arrive!

Remember when promised free phones to developers with popular applications – a Motorola or Nexus One to be exact? They’re finally making good on their promise, and to be honest, it didn’t take long. Brenton Klik, maker of the 2nd most popular flashlight app on Android Market (FlashLight), has just received his brand new Nexus One with a nice letter from Google. For those with bad eyes who don’t want to squint: Dear Developer, We’re pleased to present you with a complimentary Nexus One – the latest Android-powered phone from Google. The enclosed Nexus One is ready to use right out of the box – it can be setup online either through a carrier network if you already have an activated , or simply over Wi-Fi network. The attached document provides tips and tricks that will help you get started on Nexus One. Also attached are pointers to resources for using Nexus One and developing applications on the Android platform. We are very excited about Nexus One, and hope the enclosed unit will help you advance your development efforts on the Android Platform. Best wishes, The Android Team I’m sure it’ll take a long time for Google to get all of the free phones out, but they’re at least beginning the process of chipping away. We’re eagerly awaiting ours so we can hold another contest! Meanwhile, we’ve heard some of the developers from the DC Dev Lab ( promised the day before ) are still waiting for theirs – we’ll keep our fingers crossed for you! [Thanks Brent!]

Gesture Search: An Open Letter To Google

March 21, 2010 by MrAndroid

By now many of you have discovered that Gesture Search is available to all Android 1.6+ devices from the Market. Now question is… is it useful? Most people I have spoken to have given me something along the lines of, “Sort of, but it’s not as accessible as I’d like”. So while this is a Google Labs product, meaning it’s in the famous “” stage, I have something for Google to take into consideration. The issue here is that the gesture search is just not quick enough to access. While many have told me to put it on my homescreen, it’s still not any more useful than using the universal Google Search widget. So now all of the enlightened people are thinking well maybe Google should build it into apps like the contact list, GMail, or even in a homescreen widget. That might be all fine and dandy but let’s go back to what Android is all about. Android is all about collaboration and improvement as can be seen from the Open Handset Alliance’s initiatives. So why not make Google Gesture Search a developer tool? Gestures have long since been available to developers since Android 1.6, but think of all the uses developers could get out of universal search within their applications? Today, have an abundance of tools at their fingertips to improve all aspects of applications. AdMob to improve profitability, JTwitter to make twitter clients, Google Maps integration, and even GUI design via DroidDraw. All of these tools distributed for free so that developer’s can take them and make applications that are better than those on any mobile platform. I imagine being in a twitter client and searching my followers by drawing their name so that I can send them a direct message. How about being  in the Android Guys App and searching articles with gesture search? So why not make gesture search open and let developers run with it. Let us integrate it into applications, widgets, and more. Give the people what they want! Sincerely, The Android Community Might We Suggest… New Mobile Search Features from Google Google rolled out a couple of handy new features on its mobile-optimized site late yesterday, making it easier to access search results on your phone that you generated previously on your desktop or l…

Tim Bray My Android Doppelganger

Tim Bray My Android Doppelganger

Tim Bray earlier this week joined Google as an Android advocate and his statements toward the mobile landscape and why he made the move echo my own sentiments as to why I support Android & being myself an Android advocate. Tim Bray is a prominent figure being the co-inventor of the XML Web standard & working at Sun Microsystems / Oracle before joining Google. He points out on his site why he “saw the light” & joined Google & Android against the “Dark Side”: Google needs, and is committed to, Android; it’s not just a hobby. The Android user experience is very good and, more important, getting better fast. It’s developer-friendly; the barriers to entry are very low for the several million people on the planet who are comfy with the java programming language. The APIs are pretty good in my experience, and even more important, complete. Near as I can tell, there’s nothing interesting the phones can do that’s not exposed through some API or other. Anyone can build any they want around the Android software; no approval required. Anyone can sell any program they write via the Android Market; no approval required. It’s open-source. The smartphone arena where Android plays is extra interesting right now, with space for radical experimentation both on the technology and business fronts. The mobile space has had a huge impact in the emerging economies of the less-developed world and I think that’s just getting started. I want to be part of that story and Android seems like the right software platform for it. I’ll enjoy competing with Apple. He goes on to say about Apple & the iPhone what sounds like my own ranting over the years. “ The iPhone vision of the mobile Internet’s future omits controversy, sex, and freedom, but includes strict limits on who can know what and who can say what. It’s a sterile Disney-fied walled garden surrounded by sharp-toothed lawyers. The people who create the apps serve at the landlord’s pleasure and fear his anger. I hate it. I hate it even though the iPhone hardware and software are great, because freedom’s not just another word for anything, nor is it an optional ingredient. The big thing about the Web isn’t the technology, it’s that it’s the first-ever platform without a vendor. From that follows almost everything that matters, and it matters a lot now, to a huge number of people. It’s the only kind of platform I want to help build. Apple apparently thinks you can have the benefits of the Internet while at the same time controlling what programs can be run and what parts of the stack can be accessed and what developers can say to each other. I think they’re wrong and see this job as a chance to help prove it .” I don’t think he would disagree with my assertion made at SMX West earlier this month that supporting Android is like avoiding the Berlin Wall of the iPhone – so look-wise beyond the strong chin we may not be the same, but he calls it as he sees it, which is what I have been saying on GAB and conferences for well over a year now.
