ASUS Confirms Tablet Plans

With Computex only a few months away, Taiwan-based ASUS has confirmed plans for a pair of “ killers”. In an interview with Forbes’ Elizabeth Woyke, ASUS revealed that they are prepping “at least two tablets” and are expected to unveil them at the June event. Chairman Jonney Shih thinks there is room for tablets somewhere in the mix between netbooks, smartphones, and e-book readers. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, one device is expected to be Windows-based while the other is either Android or Chrome. The based unit will be centered around content consumption with a focus on media whereas the Windows unit will be more powerful. If anyone can put out an inexpensive tablet, it’s ASUS. They debuted the Eee PC back in 2007 and essentially kicked off the low-cost netbook era. We’ll find out in early June as to what ASUS has up their sleeves.  Be sure to keep an eye on AndroidGuys for the latest information as we can gather it. Latest AdMob Report Shows Android Eating Symbian’s Share of Pie

AdMob released their February 2010 report last week and it confirms what we’ve been seeing and saying for the last year or more: Android is growing very quickly and it’s chopping away at the competition.  Over the span of 12 months, Android has gone from 2 percent smart phone share worldwide to 24 percent.  Much of the growth comes at Symbian’s expense with the Nokia-flavored OS dropping from 43% to 18% share over the same period.  Here in the United States, Android continues to gain steam as it grew from 27 percent to 42 percent share over the last four months.  The iPhone appears to be bearing the brunt of Android’s assault, dropping from 55% to 44% in the same time frame.  Another month of the current trend and Android could eclipse the Apple behemoth for us in the US.  To be fair, it’s nearly impossible for one handset to stave off an onslaught of phones that only gets bigger and better. Of course, these numbers are not 100% accurate nor should they be considered definitive.  However, as long as the “system” stays the same, it should still provide valuable insight.  So how does AdMob compile their data and put these estimates together? They measure requests from a network of over 15,000 mobile sites and and calculate percentages based off of individual handsets. The top 5 Android handsets in terms of requests on the AdMob network were the Motorola Droid, HTC Dream, HTC Hero, HTC Magic, and the . sabljrvxf Might We Suggest… Three Months In, Android Has 5% of US Smartphone Market Share According to recent figures released by AdMob Mobile Metrics, Android has grabbed 5% of the US smart phone market.  This is up from 3% in January.  Not too shabby for a clunky device, is it? Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G: It Sizzles?

I was just perusing through Sprint’s developers website and came across something kinda strange. On the site, Sprint’s upcoming 4G powerhouse device was listed with all of its glorious specs. However, the title of it threw me off. It was called the “ Sizzle.” No, this is not Photoshopped. Anyone have any thoughts as to what this is all about? It’s probably either a typo, or someone messing around. Either way, it’s good for a laugh. See for yourself… Might We Suggest… HTC EVO 4G (a.k.a. Supersonic) on Sprint It’s here! Android Users Consume More Ads

Android generates nearly the same ad requests as iPhone from a much smaller marketshare. AdMob’s just-released report (pdf) of mobile ad data from February, 2010 includes great news for our favorite , noting that “Android was the fastest growing operating system in the AdMob network year-over-year.” But more importantly, putting the report in the context of other recent data suggests that Android users are a better audience for advertisers than users of iPhones or Blackberries. Android users, only 5.2% of U.S. smartphones, accounted for 42% of ad requests in AdMob’s report. IPhone users generated 44%, nearly the same percentage of ad requests as Android, but from five times the marketshare: 25.3%. Blackberry lags, with 41.6% market share generating only 7% of ad requests. (U.S. smartphone marketshare via comScore’s report last month .) Worldwide, Android’s share of smartphone ad requests jumped from 2% in February, 2009 to 24% in February, 2010. numbers follow a similar pattern. That 24%, half iPhone’s share, comes from less than 5% of the world’s smartphone market, while Apple generates its 50% of requests from almost 15% of worldwide smartphone . Again, Blackberry trails far behind, its almost 20% of worldwide smartphones accounting for only 4% of ad requests. (Worldwide smartphone marketshare via Gartner’s report last month .) What does this mean? It means that the average Android is much more active in generating ad requests than users of other platforms, both via web browsing and in ad-supported apps. Simply put, advertisers’ money is much better spent on Android users than on iPhone or Blackberry users. Ha Ha! You suck, I rock! It’s no secret that I’m a huge Android fanboy. Heck, my first story on AndroidGuys was about me being exactly that , and I’ve even shared my doll  memorabilia collection with you guys . In last weeks poll we asked you to complete the following sentence, “You might be an Android fanboy if…” Judging from the turnout, the Android community has a pretty decent sense of (unlike some other fruity fanboys)… While we had a couple hundred responses, I’m just going to post a few here. Some funny, some… well, let’s just say that there were definitely a few that weren’t appropriate (SICK! Some of you guys are SICK!) for posting here. Those have been omitted (I never imagined fruity fanboys being able to do THAT!) here. So, without further ado, I bring you, You Might Be An Android Fanboy If… You find yourself pressing on the TV screen trying to add a widget. You use Layers to find your second story bathroom. You get into west side story style dance fights with iphone users. You ask a woman what apps she comes with. You have an android fan fiction involving a cross over with the smurfs and Steve jobs as Garagmel. You own an Android T-shirt for each day of the week. When asked your favorite celebrity, you say Cyanogen. You dig down anyone on Digg crowing about their iPhone! You Google on the loo (toilet). You have Android bed sheets. You sell your soul to get an N1 because all the cool kids have one. You actually use Google Wave. You see little droids in your dreams. You yell at people buying apples in the grocery store. You never had to jailbreak your just to make a phone call. Your first time turning on your Nexus One was booting into the bootloader. You think trix are for green robots. You’re an electirc sheep. (I like this one, good job. –Scotty) You still willingly use a G1. You read the android guys app more than you work. You check AndroidGuys every day. You bought an Android Pillow. You can’t wait to get up every morning to go to the market and update apps. You’re always showing your iPhone friends things they can’t do, and follow by saying,”But the iphone’s good too!” so they dont feel bad. You fantasize about floating widgets in the air. You laugh when an iPhone user drops their precious. You find that anything “Apple” irritates you. You refuse to buy a product because the company has an iPhone app but not an Android app! You pull out your android whenever you go near or in apple store The first thing you touch in the morning an the last thing in the night isn’t your girlfriend You own more android phones than you do lines of service. You have a bluetooth bud in one ear, an ear bud in the other and Google Maps running while driving down the road. You just bought a cliq a month ago and you’re still gonna buy a Nexus One. You bleed green. You wear your charger as a belt. Fake G1 sciphones make your blood boil and send you into a DROIDRAGE!!! You find your girlfriend less attractive due to her lack of metal parts and green skin. Thanks to Kamlyn, DaBlackAnarch, Fury, and Matthew Patience for their contributions. As I said, some are good. Some are… yeah. I bet you guys can do a better job in the comments. So, care to continue? Android Isn’t The Most Popular… Yet.

No matter when you got into Android, whether it was since the beginning of time (Novemebr 5, 2007) or since a week ago, you have seen Android grow in some way. The latest growth we hear about is from Canalys, a research firm, that says Android will have a growth rate of 169.2% this year. While that is a huge jump Android is still running behind the current leaders RIM and Apple. This rise in Android has a lot to do with the availability across multiple carriers and price point for consumers who are buying smartphones. These lower priced Android phones will rocket Android’ share from 9.7% to 18.9% this year. Both RIM Blackberry and Apple iPhone are to see a significant drop in market share due to Android’s rise. One more thing I assume we will see a large drop in is the amount of people giving confused looks they give you when you talk about Android! Tech Titan Tim Bray Joins Team Android, Promptly States Intentions

ZDNet is reporting that the man who helped create XML, Tim Bray, has joined team Android as a “developer advocate.” Bray himself made the announcement recently on his own blog. Bray, who is as well known as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in some circles, will be the new public face of Android.  He is looking to help Android, along with the Big G, overcome marketing and legal challenges from .  Bray will certainly be a welcome addition to the team. In his own blog posting, Bray wrote this: “Apple apparently thinks you can have the benefits of the Internet while at the same time controlling what programs can be run and what parts of the stack can be accessed and what developers can say to each . I think they’re wrong and see this job as a chance to help prove it.” Can’t wait to see more Tim Bray quotes.  Looks like the Vs. Apple rivalry is about to get even more interesting. Report Shows Droid Beats iPhone 1M Benchmark

March 16, 2010 by MrAndroid

Did you know that it took the iPhone only 74 days to reach 1 million units sold?  Oh you’ve heard that, huh?  Well, did you know that the Motorola Droid moved more units in the same time frame?  Yeah, you probably didn’t expect that.  Frankly, neither did we.  The latest report from Flurry shows the Droid pushing 1.05 million handsets in the first 74 days of release, eclipsing the number set by Apple. There are a number of contributing factors as to how this is possible and Flurry points them out.  For starters, the iPhone had to contend with the general perception that handsets were for more than just making and receiving phone calls.  Until the iPhone came out, most consumers viewed as something for business users or technically proficient users.  A few years later, smart phones are quickly replacing feature phones for users who are coming out of contract.  The general public knows that you can have an easy-to-use phone that’s both fun and highly functional. The Droid also benefited from being released in the middle of the busiest buying season of the year while the iPhone was dropped in the middle of the year.  It doesn’t hurt to have a $100 million ad campaign blitzing consumers from all angles either. Another reason for the Droid’s success is the carrier it’s paired with.  Verizon is the largest provider in the US with over 90 million subscribers while AT&T was at just around 68 million customers when the iPhone was released. For a couple of years now, people have been looking for the iPhone killer.  Verizon and Motorola jumped all over that and sold the Droid as exactly that – the most capable phone in the world, on the biggest network. As great as this figure is for Android, that number could be higher.  One thing that’s not pointed out in the report is how consumers have a considerably better selection of smart phones to choose from.  Were there not other Android phones or the evolved BlackBerry lanscape, the Droid would look just that much better. Looking at the super phone that is the One over its first 90 days, one would get the sense that it’s a monumental failure.  After moving 135,000 units, it’s only a fraction of the figures set by the Droid and iPhone.  However, there are a few things to consider.  First, advertising is done via web, primarily through Google AdWords.  Secondly, the means by which one purchases the phone is vastly different than anything before it.  There’s no stopping by your local T-Mobile to pick one of these up.  Speaking of the carrier, they’re in a distant fourth place with just over 33 million subscribers.  While we can’t point to any one of these as the reason behind such a relatively small number, nonetheless they are contributing factors. Over time, we can likely expect two things:  As the Google store evolves and adds more handsets and carriers into the mix, the general awareness will help new devices get added exposure.  On the other hand, it will be harder and harder to beat the 1M benchmark set by Droid.  More choice in phones and providers will spread share out amongst everyone. BlackBerry Users Pine for Android

A recent Crowd Science study indicates that BlackBerry users have wandering eyes and are considering platforms for their next handset.  Roughly 1/3rd of BlackBerry owners would switch to an phone, specifically the Nexus One.  According to Crowd Science CEO John Martin, this indicates a restlessness with the current brand and allure of other platforms.  On the other hand, Android users are very loyal to their handsets.  Roughly 90% of those surveyed planned to stay with green robot-powered phones. The survey also found (PDF) that Android users tend to be younger and less affluent than iPhone and Blackberry users.  We’ve heard similar things from other reports as well.  We say, hook ‘em young anyways.  With a 90% loyalty rate, that sounds like life long Android owners.  For more on the survey, including additional results and the details on how things were conducted, head to the Crowd Science blog .
