LG Prepping C710 “Aloha” Superphone
As companies like HTC and Samsung continue to push Android forward with high-end device like the EVO 4G and Samsung Galaxy S, other handset makers are reacting with their own super phones. LG appears to be waking up to Android’s potential and finally getting to work on their own powerhouse. This comes as welcome news as the Eve and Swift aren’t exactly knocking socks off around the world. It’s being reported on tweakers.net that the South Korean manufacturer is prepping a C710 Aloha phone with a physical QWERTY. Other specs peg the phone with an 800×480 resolution screen, Android 2.1, GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity, and support for 802.11n WiFi. Be sure to check back as we’ll pass any future details along as we can get them. 150,000+ Incredibles In Warehouse, Ready for April Launch?
CTIA came and went without any Android-related Verizon news. After watching Sprint and a few others walk away with all the green robot glory, we’re waiting for Big Red to drop something on us. According to an AndroidForums thread , we could be seeing something in the next few weeks. Allegedly, the screen your looking at is from an inventory system that shows 156,709 units “On Order”. It’s said that this status indicates they’re in a warehouse, ready to go. You tell us – Is Verizon gonna drop the Incredible on us any time soon? According to Engadget, the long awaited Android 2.1 rollout has commenced for Droid owners. Start earlier today, 1,000 started receiving the notification that an update is available for their phone. After skipping Wednesday, the rollout will hit full steam and find its way to 200,000 users a day until everyone is blanketed. We just received a picture (Thanks Kellex!) of a Droid showing 2.1 which appears to be pretty legit. AT&T Planning to Lock Down all Android Handsets?
As CTIA was kicking off last week, AT&T and Dell unveiled the forthcoming Aero handset . The sleek touch-only device which features a 3.5-inch screen and 5 megapixel camera may have something in common with AT&T’s other Android phone, the Motorola Backflip. According to PhoneNews.com, the Dell Aero will not allow for installation of applications that do not come from the Android Market. We hope this isn’t a growing trend for the nation’s second largest provider. Sadly, this doesn’t have the feel of “coincidence” to us. For whatever reasons, AT&T doesn’t appear to like one of the fundamental benefits of Android – choice. Thankfully, there’s still a Nexus One that can be had with the full Google experience. How many of you were considering picking up an Android phone from AT&T only to rethink your decision? Kyocera Zio M6000 Likely Headed to Sprint
Handset maker Kyocera was in Las Vegas last week to show off their new Android-based Zio M6000. Touted as a mass-market device for first-time smart phone buyers, it’s rumored to land on Sprint at around $99 with a contract. This marks the first smart phone from Kyocera in over five years and comes roughly two years after merging business with Sanyo. As many of you might already know, Sanyo handsets were a longtime staple in the Sprint lineup. The Zio M6000 features Android 1.6, a 3.5-inch touch display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, microSD slot, WiFi, and a host of other specs increasingly common in Android phones. Kyocera plans to have the handset on a nationwide US carrier by the 3rd quarter of 2010 and expects to have Android 2.1 as well. By that point, Android enthusiasts will likely scoff at the phone, but that’s fine with Kyocera. They are not going after the early adopters and tech junkies. The plan is to appeal to those who have never owned a smart phone and/or have a tight budget. I spent some time playing with the phone at CTIA and found it to be rather unremarkable. The ho-hum specs and form factor did little to excite me. That’s not to say, however, that it wouldn’t have broad appeal with the right price point and rate plan. At $99, the Zio M6000 could have a very difficult time contending with the likes of HTC, Samsung, and Motorola. Considering the potential competition in the second half of the year, I’d like to see this in the $0-$50 price range when it arrives. CTIA First Impressions: HTC EVO
HTC Evo next to the Cliq XT I had a chance to sit down yesterday and spend a few minutes playing with the latest handset from HTC. Previously touted as the Supersonic, the phone had rather lofty expectations to live up to. Would it deliver? Like you need to ask. Right off the bat, my first impression was that the phone had a substantial weight to it. Although not too heavy, it feels like you have a quality phone in your hand. I was told that the form factor we played with is not final nor was the OS build. I can’t imagine it changing too much as we looked as some accessories that appeared like finished designs as well. The dock you see in the pictures will have HDMI output. We watched a few movie trailers play in HD on both the EVO as well as on an 85-inch television via HDMI connection. Stunning. At 4.3-inches, I could easily see myself catching up on some television shows or movies. We couldn’t test out the camera due to the lighting conditions but did sneak a peek at some pictures that were already on the phone. At 8 megapixels, this handset features the best Android camera on the market (next to the Xperia X10). Pairing up 4G with a front-facing camera just opens up the door to all kinds of possibilities. I can’t wait to see what developers can do with this technology and how it advances Android. Dock with HDMI output The EVO works as a 4G hotspot for up to 8 handsets which just baffles the mind. It’s hard to fathom replacing my home internet connection but that’s exactly what might happen. Might We Suggest… Android and 4G T-Mobile‘s new 3G network will show off some of Android’s most compelling applications and capabilities. Wait until we see 4G from Sprint and others can do for the platform!…

It is even rumored that the EVO will have the capability to run voice and data at the same time, like GSM networks. Sprint says that feature is still in the testing. The official place for EVO action is on Sprint’s website . There are a couple videos and a great picture gallery in Engadget’s write up . My pockets are drooling over this one. CTIA First Impressions: Samsung Galaxy S
Just left the keynote from Samung and spent a few minutes playing with the Galaxy S. First off, words cannot describe just how sharp and bright the screen is. SuperAMOLED really is that – SUPER. The 4-inch screen is the most crisp image I have ever seen on a handset. We watched a few minutes of video on the Galaxy S and can say that it’s superior to pretty much anything I’ve seen so far. Even as big as this phone is, I couldn’t believe how light it was. It literally felt like half of a phone in my hands. Angel was pleased at how nice it was in her tiny, gal hands . In terms of softare, the phone comes with Layar, TeleAtlas, Swype, a document editor, e-book reader, and more. See below for a full list of confirmed hardware specs , thanks to the press release.
