Myriad turns Java into Android apps – Video

Android just got access to a whole new library of pre-written Java-Based applications. Myriad launched a tool called J2Android earlier last week. This tool can be used to convert thousands of MIDlet applications and games already on the market and allows Dalvik to run them. Chief product officer of Myriad, Malcolm Dawe said: “As Android devices appear in greater volumes, the challenge has been how quickly the industry can make apps and content available to cope with user demand. One obvious source is the catalogue of quality titles already available but locked away in Java format.” Myriad is the same company that is working on bring Dalvik Turbo to Android. This will allow for faster processing of games and apps, this will make Android 3 times faster than it is now. Click here to view the embedded video. [via telecoms ]

Android 2.1 gives Galaxy Spica new functionality

In a press release that was just sent to us, Samsung announced its plans to update the Galaxy Spica to Android 2.1. This update brings all the goodies that come with 2.1 and a few from Samsung themselves. Unlike most updates to Android devices this one will come via PC Studio 7 which is Samsung’s unique in-house software upgrade program. This software came bundled with the Spica, but if you no longer have it you can downloaded it at the Samsung mobile website ( http://www.samsungmobile.com ). The update will allow you to have nine home screens, some variation of augmented reality software that allows you to use the camera to get information on your surroundings is included. There are also new Samsung widgets, Visual bookmark and PC Sync. But the fun doesn’t stop there, there is a new media browser, camera enhancements and improved messaging functionality that makes it easier to attach files to MMS and email. If you live in Germany you can expect this update sometime this month then it will make its way to European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Asia, Africa and rest of the world.

Hott $98 Tablet To Rock Android, Crush iPad?

The team behind the Hott MD500 Android Tablet is already calling their new baby the “iPad Killer” – and THIS is probably the worst thing the company could do. The iPad hasn’t even been launched yet competitors are already giving it the stage as the device to beat. In my mind, silence is golden, but uttering anything “i” with a killer comment is sure to grab more attention and unfortunately I’ve taken the bait. The Hott MD500 has a 4.8″ screen so it hardly competes directly with the iPad. The key thing with this Hott device is that the manufacturer will be selling it for only $98. You’ll then have to pay the middleman-fee, I’m assuming this will be rebranded or picked up by a big retailer taking margins, but it should still be pretty darn affordable. My concern is the old saying “you get what you pay for”. With the $98 Hott MD500 tablet, does it have shortcomings in specs that price won’t be able to overcome? Here is the Hott next to the Archos 5: By the way, tune into about 3 minutes where the fully excited conversation goes limp. The videographer ( Charbax ) asks about Android 1.5 and whether or not they’ll upgrade it to which the company rep responds with reluctantly Frankenstein-ish “uhhhh. yes.” Doesn’t sound too convincing.

Resolved Kogan Promises $200 HD Pad
It’s been a while since we last checked in on Ruslan Kogan, the brains behind the just-about-released Kogan Agora Pro. With a launch only a few weeks away, the Australian electronics maker pulled their Android handse t back and quietly went off the radar. So what is Ruslan up to now? Bigger, better things! Recently, he was found demonstrating a new tablet at the MediaConnect Kickstart forum in Queensland. His goal is to release a pad with full HD capability for under $200. The demo model he had with him featured an ARM 600MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB built in memory, and an SDHC card slot allowed for expansion. While the screen on the demo was resistive and low resolution (800×480), Kogan stated that any production model would use a capacitive display. High definition videos would play via an HDMI output at 1080p resolution. So when can we expect to see this “Kogan Pad” to arrive? That depends. “We’re capable of releasing it within a month. I want to hear from people what they want. Apple has created a lot of hype around the iPad, but what are people actually going to do with it? I’m not sure who the ideal consumer is for it. Maybe my Mum, or my mates and me when we’re around the TV watching funny YouTube clips.” Source: Androinica Might We Suggest… Camangi WebStation Slashes Price to $275 The Camangi team has shaved over 25% off of the price of their WebStation, knocking it down to $275. However, it’s likely not enough of a discount to draw a substantial amount of attention. It’s up …
