Will the Droid get Froyo? Hopefully soon!

I came across this post on Droid Life today and I got all excited. As a Motorola Droid owner I am hopping that it is more than a rumor We just received word from one of our most reliable sources that the official Android 2.2 update will be hitting the Motorola Droid starting July 13th. I know, I know, here we go again right? After the pain we all experienced with 2.1, it’s hard to even mention a rumored Froyo update date, but this one feels legitimate enough to share. Let me just toss out some thoughts as to why this could easily happen… 1. We’ve already seen July mentioned in a couple of Verizon systems. 2. The Droid X arrives 2 days later on the 15th. What better way to keep your millions of Droid 1 customers happy than by dropping a major OS update on them a few days before a new device takes over the Droid throne. 3. July 13th is a Tuesday, and if you remember the 2.1 update, Verizon tends to like Tuesdays. 4. We saw the release of an extremely polished Droid Froyo build (FRF84B) this week which should mean we’re closer than ever. Thoughts? Fingers and toes crossed? Motorola Droid to Get Android 2.2 Update on July 13? [RUMOR]

As a Motorola Droid owner who had to sit through the grueling wait for an OTA update to Android 2.1, I almost didn’t want to run this story. No reason to get everyone’s hopes up when history tells us that most rumored (and sometimes even official ) dates are usually never met. But as it is my job to dutifully report on all things Android I’ll just get this one out of the way: The latest rumors are suggesting the Droid could be seeing the update to Froyo as soon as July 13th. If the fairly polished leaked build from earlier in the week is any indication, we’ll at least say there is a possibility this date could stick. We’re not holding our breath though. [via Droid-Life ]

Verizon Will Have a Hot, Droid-y Summer Thanks to Motorola

Ah, October 2009. It seemed like it was just yesterday that Verizon started getting all of our under garments in a bunch (in a “relatively” good way) with all of those Droid Does and iDon’t teasers leading up to the launch of their first Android-based phone, the Motorola Droid . More than half a year later that momentum has continued with several phones – from Motorola or otherwise – and Verizon will be upping the stakes even more this July. According to the Wall Street Journal , Verizon and Motorola have signed a deal to “ensure some of its upcoming smartphones will by heavily promoted” by Verizon. Motorola will be launching at least two devices this July with the carrier – one of them being the speedy Motorola Shadow that we’ve been getting excited for – and they’ve stated both devices would be running Android 2.2. This comes right after Motorola’s Co-CEO Sanjay Jha ensured us that their main focus remains to be Android, and that we should be expecting more devices soon . With a myriad of high-end devices launching from at least three of the four major US carriers this summer, I can’t imagine that anyone’s purchase decision didn’t just get a little bit difficult (that’s if you’re planning to switch carriers based on hardware, of course). We just can’t wait to see what that other Motorola phone turns out to be – and we definitely can’t wait to feast our eyes on a whole new slew of Droid advertisements.

Droid 2.1 OTA Rolling Out Over “Next Few Weeks”
April 1, 2010 by MrAndroid

A small sample of Motorola Droid owners have gotten the Official Android 2.1 OTA with the rest either choosing to manually install Android 2.1 the backdoor way or wait patiently for the real deal. If you’re in the latter group, you may want to try out the manual upgrade if you don’t feel like waiting a few weeks as the Motorola support forums indicate that’s how long it COULD take to reach your device: We are pleased to announce the much anticipated DROID 2.1 upgrade has begun rolling out. The roll out will happen in phases and will be delivered to your DROID over the course of the next few weeks. While some LOVE the new features and others GRIPE about the lack of additional homescreens and uselessness of Live Wallpapers, I think one item absolutely makes this update amazing – text-to-speech in more places: As many of you know, 2.1 will bring several enhancements to your DROID. These include pinch to zoom for web browsing, speech to text functionality, a new and improved photo gallery and dynamic live wallpapers. For the pure purpose of reading text messages out loud while I drive and have them converted to text for quick, accurate and safe messaging – I’m elated to get this update. The 2.1 update has been a big topic the last few months and, although it didn’t go off without a hitch, Motorola is certainly making efforts to improve their customer experience and support, and you can’t forget that Verizon had a hand in this as well: We sincerely apologize for what we know has been a frustrating experience for you regarding communications on the status of the upgrade. We want to reassure all of our fans that we are dedicated to providing you with the best possible service and we have been listening to each and every one of your comments. To that end, we excited to announce we will be launching a Support tab on our Facebook page in the next two weeks as well as dedicating more resources to answer your inquiries. We hope it will become a valuable asset where we can not only directly address your technical questions but also provide a place for you to share ideas with one another, report problems and give us general feedback. Now that you know it might take a few weeks… will you try out the manual 2.1 upgrade ?

RUMOR: Droid Getting Update Today?

Either we have an anonymous tipster in-the-know or someone took some time to play a very mean April Fools joke on us. We’re hearing a rumor – one that we cannot verify or deny so take it at face value – that Verizon Wireless will begin a Droid update today. Don’t hold your breath, we’ve heard this before, but in an E-Mail that was supposedly sent out to select VZW employees, we get a hint that this COULD be the real deal. A link in the E-Mail leads to this Droid Support PDF : Look familiar? Maybe… a couple weeks ago we posted almost the same thing which was already available on the VZW website. But check out the software version – it has changed from ESE53 to ESE81, signaling perhaps they’ve updated the package and truly are ready to move forward. Now the juicy stuff. Here is the E-Mail that is reportedly being received by VZW employees. Note the bulk of users would get the update on April 1st. If this is a mean April Fools Day joke it isn’t by me… its by the anonymous tipster, Verizon or Motorola. Starting 03/30/2010, Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for the DROID by Motorola. Users will be able to upgrade their software to version AP: ESE81/BP: C_01.3E.03P to receive new improvements and enhancements. *Key Advantages:* o Email – Yahoo Mail is now supported – customers can simply sign in with their Yahoo! Email address and password. Note: Yahoo! Email is not available over Wi-Fi o Pinch to Zoom now available in the Browser, Maps, and Gallery o Speech-to-Text – Customers can now use their voice instead of typing whenever a text-entry box appears o Google Goggles is now preloaded o The new Gallery application uses 3D layout and shows both pictures taken with the customer’s Android device and images from Picasa Web Albums account online *Software Schedule:* Below is the software-upgrade notification schedule (All times listed are Eastern Time): o At noon on 03/30, 1,000 users will receive notification of the update. o At 11:59 PM on 03/30, 9,000 more users will receive the update notification. o After the first 10,000 users receive the update on 03/30, there will be a 24-hour period when no additional upgrades will be delivered. o On Day 3 (04/01), 200,000 users will receive the update notification at 11:59 PM. This schedule will continue each day thereafter until the update has been delivered to all users. *Download & Install Conditions:* o An OTA download requires 40% or more power availability if the device is not connected to an external power source or 20% or more power if it is connected to an external source o If roaming, the customer will not receive the update. The only option in this scenario is for the subscriber to enable Wi-Fi and wait for a mandatory OTA. The wait period in this case will not be more than 12 hours o User must wait to receive the upgrade via OTA o User is unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls during this time o Users will see the following information when they select* More info* on the update screen:/ This software update includes new enhancements to support Yahoo! Email, pinch-to-zoom, and many other improvements for your DROID by Motorola. You will be unable to use your device or make emergency calls for the duration of the install. The software updates automatically, and your DROID will power off and on as part of this software upgrade. For more information please visit: //_www.verizonwireless.com/droidsupport_/ /./ *Additional Enhancements and Improvements:* o Google Maps update – Starred items are stored and synced automatically between Google Maps on the device and maps.google.com on the PC See the _DROID by Motorola_ support website for a more detailed list of the enhancements, improvements, and download instructions. Also note that all the bullet points aren’t the same, such as “Email accounts no longer need to be re-entered after an over-the-air update.” Make of it what you will. We clearly labeled it as a rumor because it isn’t something we can verify, but we felt it was worthy of posting. Now we’ll just have to wait a few days and see how it pans out.

Motorola: Droid 2.1 Update “Taking Longer Than Expected”
March 26, 2010 by MrAndroid
In a Facebook post to help calm the stirring waters of the Droid ocean, Motorola posts a very vague (welcome to PR) announcement telling everyone they know we want 2.1, but the update is taking longer than expected, and they’ll let us know when they have updates. We know THEY know we want 2.1 (mouthful), and we DEFINITELY know the update is taking longer than expected (duh, that was just rubbing it in), but what makes them think we really care any more when they have “updates”? It’s getting to be a bit like the boy who cried wolf. Or in this case, the Manufacturer who promised 2.1! We’re all still eagerly awaiting Android 2.1 just as much as before, and based on this article you MAY think we’re all still hanging on their every word, but personally I’m thinking just the opposite. I’ve chosen to give up hope and pay no attention to the promises, and instead be pleasantly surprised if and when 2.1 comes. That’s an overly pessimistic view, but if it sets me up to go from complacency to happiness how can it hurt? And for those of you who ARE hanging on MOTO’s every word, don’t worry – I’ll still keep you in the loop! And by the way, while this whole 2.1 thing HAS been kind of a train wreck, I’m sure not all the blame should land in MOTO’s court. They’re trying to err on the side of safety which is a good thing, and we all know about Verizon Wireless’ rigorous testing procedures – probably a good thing too. Even worse would be to get a 2.1 update that adds new features but makes your phone a lot more buggy.

Dana Delaney Does Droid In Castle

In the hit TV series, Castle , Dana Delaney plays Special Agent Jordan Shaw. And in the latest episode ( Tick, Tick, Tick… ) Special Agent Jordan Shaw was playing with a Motorola Droid . At about 10 minutes 30 seconds in, Hulu reveals the latest case of Android product placement: I haven’t personally seen this show before, but based on an extremely brief first impression I’m guessing its pretty predictable. After all the next episode, airing March 29th, is called “Boom!” That’s not a joke… it’s really called “Boom!” – and they’re playing this song as the introduction music. Okay – that last part is a joke. And by the way… don’t think I don’t know EXACTLY what you were thinking when you clicked through to read this article. Pervert. [Thanks for sending this in Will!]

Droid Doesn’t – Android 2.1 Delayed A-G-A-I-N

Motorola Droid owners were already promised and refused Android 2.1 once before and now it has happened again. Yesterday we saw Verizon announce Droid 2.1 update information and heard Motorola say that at 12 noon a limited number of people would get the update before rolling it out to the masses shortly after. Well, noon has passed and zero people have gotten the update with an expected zero people to have gotten it by the end of the day. This internal screenshot leaked at Engadget explains it all: To summarize in Shakespearean form: Verizon/Moto: Art thou hungry? Droid Owners: Starving! Verizon/Moto: We hath brought edible delights to quench thy deepest hungers! Droid Owners: Thank you! Verizon/Moto: Just kidding Droid Owners: ? Verizon/Moto: Go away Excuse me but I’m trying to distract myself from depressing reality of the situation.
