Droid Doesn’t – Android 2.1 Delayed A-G-A-I-N

Motorola Droid owners were already promised and refused Android 2.1 once before and now it has happened again. Yesterday we saw Verizon announce Droid 2.1 update information and heard Motorola say that at 12 noon a limited number of people would get the update before rolling it out to the masses shortly after. Well, noon has passed and zero people have gotten the update with an expected zero people to have gotten it by the end of the day. This internal screenshot leaked at Engadget explains it all: To summarize in Shakespearean form: Verizon/Moto: Art thou hungry? Droid Owners: Starving! Verizon/Moto: We hath brought edible delights to quench thy deepest hungers! Droid Owners: Thank you! Verizon/Moto: Just kidding Droid Owners: ? Verizon/Moto: Go away Excuse me but I’m trying to distract myself from depressing reality of the situation.

A post today on Silicon Alley Insider says that the Google Nexus One has been on sale for 74 days and has only sold 135,000 units. They make the comparison to the Motorola DROID and iPhone sales of their first 74 days showing that both sold around 1 million units. According to these numbers the

The Motorola Droid outperformed the iPhone in its first 74 days of availability. While the first gen iPhone sold 1 million units in its first 74 days of sales, the Motorola Droid sold 1.05 million according to estimates from Flurry Analytics. These are just sales estimates rather than exact figures, but they are encouraging signs of

Droid Outsells iPhone?

Flurry, a company that has analytics tracking code on at least 1 app on 80% of iPhone and Android devices, has just released some incredibly interesting statistics. With that level of reach, the company is confident they can accurately estimate/report on unit sales of individual phone models. Want to see their estimate of Motorola Droid sales vs. Apple iPhone sales after each phone was on the market for 74 days? That’s right – the Motorola Droid beats out the iPhone (first generation) by a hair. Pretty amazing accomplishment if you ask me. And as the Android army grows in numbers on a number of levels – carriers, manufacturers, form factors, etc… – the statistics will only get more impressive. [ Flurry via MobileCrunch ]

Nexus One sales dramatically less than DROID or 1st-gen iPhone

Nexus One sales dramatically less than DROID or 1st gen iPhone

Google were always taking a risk by trying to sell the Nexus One direct to consumers rather than through more traditional carrier partnerships, and it looks like that risk hasn’t paid off. According to analytics specialists Flurry – who you might remember from previous Android-related stats – Google has sold just 135,000 Nexus One handsets after 74 days of availability. In comparison, Flurry point to the original iPhone and the Motorola DROID, which sold 1m and 1.05m respectively in their own respective first 74 days of availability. Of course, both of those devices were launched with strong carrier partners and in-store availability, while the Nexus One was offered with T-Mobile USA and online-only. Does that make the Nexus One a sales failure?  Or has the smartphone fulfilled its task: to act as a halo product for Google and spur on their other hardware partners to offer improved devices with newer versions of Android?  Let us know what you think in the comments. Inventor of the cell phone gave up his iPhone for a Motorola Droid

Inventor of the cell phone gave up his iPhone for a Motorola Droid

Most of us don’t know who Martin Cooper is, he was the first person to make a call on a handheld cell phone prototype in 1973 and he is named on the patent “radio telephone system” filed that same year. Android now has some strong endorsers in the inventor of Linux and now the inventor of cellphones. Cooper did a piece on C-SPAN last week where he talked about spectrum and the politics of the industry. He also discussed the possibility that cellphones can cause cancer. The most interesting part of the interview came around the 30 minute mark where he stated: “Depends when you ask me. I always have the latest cell phone, and I try every cell phone out, only because people like you keep asking me. Right now I’m using the Droid, because I want to get some experience with the Android operating system, and I, so far, have some favorable results.” Click here to view the embedded video. Skype Works On All Verizon’s Android Phones

Last month we learned that Verizon Wireless was officially partnering with Skype to bring an unprecedented feature set to mobile phone users in America. Exactly what that would entail? We weren’t told – we were just told some sort of integration would make it all worthwhile and it wasn’t hard to guess the options. Now Skype and Verizon have published an animated infomercial that, while it doesn’t provide full details, gives us a better idea: Verizon now lists which phones are compatible with their Skype mobile service – I’ve put three Android units all on top and all which work with Skype Mobile: Motorola Droid Motorola Devour HTC Droid Eris BlackBerry Curve 8530 BlackBerry Storm 9530 BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 BlackBerry Tour 9630 It looks like instead of trying to get a per/application fee from customers, Skype may have gone the exclusivity route as they’ve pulled their app from several mobile OS app stores. Verizon may have pinned them down for an exclusive deal with a substantial contract – something of which I’m not sure we’ll ever know the details. But most importantly – does that woman’s voice in the above video make anyone else want to poke their eyes out? [Via VZW ]

Want Droid 2.1? Get E-Mail Alert When It’s Available

Over at the official Motorola support forums our friend Matt the Moderator knows how badly people want Android 2.1 on their Droid. While there has been some miscommunication in the past, MOTO wants to make things perfectly clear moving forward. Matt has set up a thread asking people to subscribe – when 2.1 starts going out he’ll update the thread and E-Mails will be sent out to subscribed members. Our own Phases set up the same thing on AndroidForums so if you’ve already got an account with AF that might be easier. Either way you’re sure to know when 2.1 starts dropping. But hey…  not like the forums won’t light up as soon as people start getting the option to download, right? At least this will help deflect any “false alarms”.
