Blockbuster May Be Coming to Android

It’s no secret that Blockbuster has been in a lot of financial trouble lately. They have made a few changes to try and stay competitive. One of which is offering their services on mobile phone. The release of T-Mobile’s HD2 brought with it an app from Blockbuster that allows users to stream video right to their device. Blockbuster is now looking into expanding this to the Android platform. It’s likely that this will be a free app that will charge you to stream or download the content right to your phone. Some could even be offered for free, I’m sure there will be free previews. If Blockbuster can pull this off soon, it will beat their main competition, NetFlix, to the point in the mobile phone market. There’s’ currently an unofficial Netflix app in the Android Market that allows to do everything you can do on your computer except download and play movies to your phone. The blockbuster app will not only come directly from them but will include the same features as their online video delivery service as well as streaming video. This will be a welcome addition to Android and I hope it is brought to us as soon as possible. [via cnn ]

This latest rumored comes straight from an inside Verizon and HTC source. Tumors have it, this phone will be in stock in two weeks, this is awesome news for all you Verizon customers. This is another 2.1 Android device that is also worthy of the title, “Superphone”, that was given to the Nexus One. South Korea Could block The Android Market

Reports are starting to surface from South Korean government officials that the Android Market may be banned. The games in the Android Market have not yet received approval from the nation’s regulating body, the Games Ratings Board. This may cause the entire Market to be excluded from South Korean Android devices. Google’s Korea branch has received a letter from the Ratings Board outlining what changes need to be made before the Market can be approved. If Google does not make the required changes it would get banned until they are made. 4000 games has yet to be rated by this board. There are two Android phones in South Korea and up to five more are rumored to be released this year, it would be awful for these phones to be rendered marketless. [via afterdawn ]

Opera Mini 5 Beta Now Available For Android

The most popular mobile browser in the world has finally made its way to Android. This version 5 seems to be light years ahead of the version 4 which has been available for quite some time. This version now offers tabbed browsing, there is a bar at the bottom that shows you the number of tabs that you have open and when you click on it a mini view of the page appears. This browser for most will replace the stock browser. Some of the other big new features: * Speed Dial: Gives you one-touch access to 9 of your favorite sites. * Password Manager * Opera Link: Syncs your bookmarks (and Speed Dial) between your handset and your desktop (be it that you’re running Opera on your desktop, that is) The only two problems I’ve found so far is the browser doesnt recognize my existing bookmarks and there’s no Flash integration. So if you have a Flash capable phone, I would play with this but stick to the stock browser.

Google rewards Android devs with free phones

Google sent out email’s earlier today to a select group of Android developers informing them that they are eligible to receive either a Verizon Droid or a Nexus One, as part of its ‘Device Seeding Program’. Developer’s of applications that has more than 5,000 downloads and a rating of 3.5 stars or higher qualify for one of these two Android devices. The email read: “Due to your contribution to the success of Android Market, we would like to present you with a brand new Android device as part of our developer device seeding program. You are receiving this message because you’re one of the top developers in Android Market with one or more of your applications having a 3.5 star or higher rating and more than 5,000 unique downloads. In order to receive this device, you must click through to this site, read the terms and conditions of the offer and fill out the registration form to give us your current mailing address so that we can ship your device. You will receive either a Verizon Droid by Motorola or a Nexus One. Developers with mailing addresses in the US will receive either a Droid or Nexus one, based on random distribution. Developers from Canada, EU, and the EEA states (Norway, Lichtenstein), Switzerland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore will receive a Nexus One. Developers with mailing addresses in countries not listed above will not receive a phone since these phones are not certified to be used in other countries. We hope that you will enjoy your new device and continue to build more insanely popular apps for Android!” Although the developer will not have the ability to choose which device they want, this is a great incentive for Android app makers to try and put out quality products. You never know what Google may give away next. There are quite few developers who currently have older Android devices, now they can use these to help aid them in making apps compatible with the latest Android devices.
