Verizon Nexus One to get March 23rd debut?

We’ve only just seen it shuttle through the FCC , but according to the latest rumors Verizon’s CDMA version of the Google Nexus One will get its official release on March 23rd.   Neowin’s source – apparently a Google employee who has requested to remain anonymous – claims the carrier will unveil the EVDO Rev.A Nexus One on the first day of CTIA Wireless. The employee did not have any pricing information, however, either for the outright purchase price of the new Android 2.1 smartphone or for Verizon’s data plan or subsidized costs.  However they apparently confirmed it would be “competitive” with T-Mobile’s prices for the existing GSM model. Android users are largely male, statistics show 73%

Statistics show that 73% of Android users are male, whereas on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and webOS platforms, there is far less skew on either side.  The conclusions come from analytics firm Admob’s January report, which also includes several other studies . Even though there’s a galore of Android-based handsets that theoretically can cater to any niche, from gen-Yers like myself, to gen-Xers like the parents, there’s another reason besides that Android simply holds more tech appeal, more hands-on opportunity as opposed to the iPhone or Palm Pre.  It lies in Android’s marketing approach, which in short, has been skewed towards men.  For those who haven’t yet seen any of the out of the ordinary Motorola Droid commercials, there are two clips attached for perusal.  As most readers probably know, they feature industrial machinery, rockets, robots, stealth bombers, and various other high-tech paraphernalia that simply don’t express the elegance of an iPhone commercial, or the Palm Pre Plus, which is in fact advertised for moms. Click here to view the embedded video. As I said before, Android is generally speaking, more of a enthusiast platform compared to the iPhone or webOS, and readers may think that on that alone, men are more likely to select Android.  It’s true, but we need take note of the marketing aspect.  To marketers, it appears that you’ve successfully drawn men to your Android handsets, by neglecting on purpose what appeals to women in your testosterone-driven commercials. HTC Supersonic, or Incredible caught on video? [Video]

This video has everyone baffled as to what exactly they’re looking at, but we’ve narrowed it down to either the never-before-seen Supersonic, or the similarly equipped Incredible, both from HTC. An previous video uploaded onto Youtube has been pulled, but a new one apparently has surfaced at the same time.  The navigation pad at the bottom of the phone is something that the Supersonic lacks, so this just might be the Incredible after all, although there’s no red earpiece grill visible.  Maybe a third HTC Android-powered phone, then?  Share your thoughts. HTC Incredible seen in Verizon’s inventory system, March release?

Earlier this month we caught a glimpse of the incredibly red HTC Incredible, purportedly heading to Verizon’s network as its first HTC smartphone running Android 2.1.  Well, it the Incredible has now surfaced in Verizon’s inventory system, which corroborates earlier specs reports. As Electronista explains, the top SKU, ADR6300DU, is allegedly a reference for the launch kit which includesmaterials for the retailer, such as display units or pamphlets. The second SKU, ADR6300VW, is for the actual handset. The  HTC Incredible is running on the speedy Snapdragon CPU, Android 2.1 with Sense UI, 256MB of memory, and a  display rumored to be either a 3.5-inch or 3.7-inch with WVGA resolution (unconfirmed, but perhaps even AMOLED-based). Availability has yet to be released or confirmed, but the word is that CTIA’s expo held in spring, around late March, may have the expected release date. General Mobile’s Touch Stone: HTC HD2 Clone Running Android 2.0

General Mobile has been known for making knockoff’s of popular smartphones and usually we just laugh at them and forget about their existence. But this is a different situation, the Touch Stone looks to bring us something we all wanted but HTC could not deliver. Thats Android on the HD2. This phone has many of the HD2’s specs, from the 5 megapixel camera to the 4.3-inch capacitive WVGA display, but adds an “optional” analog TV tuner (which won’t do countries with digital transitions any good) and Android 2.0 atop an ARM9-based PXA935 core. Unfortunately this phone is not available yet. They are aiming for a release towards the end of the year. Who knows, by then the real HD2 may come in an Android 2.1 or higher version. Head over to Engadget for more pictures of the Touch Stone. Related posts: HTC Touch.B aka Rome, not Running Android After all? HTC Legend prematurely revealed by Dutch carrier

Any doubts that HTC might be bringing the Legend to Mobile World Congress 2010 next week look to be fast vanishing, as the smartphone – expected to be the successor to the HTC Hero – makes a (brief) appearance on the website of Dutch operator KPN .  The carrier prematurely posted a reservation form for the Legend, complete with some basic specifications. The HTC Legend was listed – as we’ve heard previously – as having a 5-megapixel camera along with GPS and AGPS.  Meanwhile a release date sometime in March 2010 was also tipped, although nothing any more specific than that.  KPN then obviously realised their mistake, as the preview page was pulled down. Garmin ASUS nuvifone A50 coming 1H 2010

Garmin-ASUS have outed their latest smartphone, and the nuvifone A50 is the first to be based on Android.  The A50 has a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, custom Garmin-ASUS UI and preloaded turn-by-turn navigation with voice prompts.  The company also provides real-time weather, traffic, fuel prices, safety cameras and flight status information. Meanwhile there’s also a multitouch-capable browser, 3-megapixel autofocus camera with geotagging, 4GB internal memory and a microSD card slot.  An accelerometer handles page orientation flips, and there’s Exchange support and the usual Google apps including access to the Android Market. No pricing details as yet, but the Garmin-ASUS nuvifone A50 will drop in Europe sometime in the first half of this year.  Based on the partnership’s past success in meeting launch estimates, however, we wouldn’t hold our breath. Press Release: Garmin-Asus nüvifone™ A50: An Android™ Smartphone with More Location Technology Than Any Other Smartphone Mobile World Congress 2010 BARCELONA, Spain–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Garmin-Asus, a co-branded alliance between Garmin® Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), and ASUSTeK® Computer Inc. (TAIEX: 2357), today announced the Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50, a touchscreen Android-powered smartphone with multiple location technologies and apps. The A50 benefits from the personalization and enhanced features offered by the Android platform, and also includes Garmin navigation with turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions for use in a car or while walking. Location features are designed into virtually every function including email, text messaging, and photos. The A50 will be on display at the Garmin-Asus booth (Hall 8, #8B127) at Mobile World Congress, February 15-18, 2010. “The A50 brings premium navigation features to the Android operating system, offering users a seamless location based experience along with access to the wealth of applications that the platform affords” “The A50 brings premium navigation features to the Android operating system, offering users a seamless location based experience along with access to the wealth of applications that the platform affords,” said Benson Lin, vice president and general manager of ASUS’ personal mobile devices business unit, handheld business group. “Location is relevant to everything you do,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “The A50 integrates navigation and GPS functionality throughout the device, which gives customers the versatility and reliability they need as they navigate their day.” The elegant and thin A50 has a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display that incorporates a finger-friendly user interface. The QWERTY touchscreen keyboard makes it easy to send and receive messages, and predictive text helps customers type faster. It also comes with hardware features like 4GB internal storage, an expandable microSD card slot, and accelerometer so every screen can be viewed in portrait or landscape mode. Access to thousands of applications The A50 integrates Google™ mobile services with one-click access to Google Search™ by voice, Google Maps™, Gmail™, YouTube™, calendar, contacts and Android Market™, where users can find more than 20,000 applications to expand and personalize their phone to fit their lifestyle. Powerful enterprise email capability The A50 includes on-device sync with Microsoft Exchange server, with the ability to wirelessly synchronize contacts, calendar and enterprise email. Account setup is quick and easy, and in a few simple steps users will have their contacts, calendar and email ready to go. High-sensitivity GPS receivers with Garmin navigation The A50 receives its location (latitude and longitude) information from multiple sources including satellite, network-based and terrestrial sources. These overlapping technologies ensure that A50 customers have the best location and navigation experience a smartphone can offer. Garmin navigation is included and preloaded on the A50. Because maps are installed on the device, customers will not have to wait for third party maps to download from a server, nor will they lose their turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation if they are out of cell phone coverage. The A50 also has many of the same features as a high-end Garmin nüvi® navigation device such as lane assist with junction view that guides drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit and realistically displays road signs. Ready for pedestrian or automotive navigation out-of-the-box, the A50 includes a custom Garmin car mount and vehicle power cable. The A50 also supports cityXplorer™ maps so that customers can plan and use routes that include public transit options such as bus, tramway, metro and suburban rail systems. cityXplorer content is available as an optional download for select cities. Thanks to the A50’s e-compass, customers will know their heading even when standing still. In addition to Android Market, the A50 has preloaded, apps through Garmin-Asus’ connected services, which includes real-time, location-relevant information like weather, traffic, fuel prices, safety cameras, flight status. Connected services information varies by country. Customers also have access to Street View in Google Maps and 3D landmark images. Surf the web With a powerful, multi-touch capable WebKit browser, the A50 allows users to browse the web at quick speeds and view streaming content. In addition, it automatically identifies location information embedded within web pages allowing the user to quickly navigate to the locations published on the world-wide web. Take quality photos The A50 includes a three mega-pixel camera with auto-focus that automatically geotags images with an exact latitude and longitude reference of where the photo was taken. Customers may then save the image so they can navigate back to the location, or email the geo-tagged image to friends. Availability The Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50 is expected to be available in Europe in the first half of 2010. Specific availability and pricing details will be given in the future. T Mobile myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack models get listed [Update: price & more memory]

As expected, T-Mobile have officially confirmed the new myTouch 3G models with 3.5mm headphone jacks .  The handset – which will be available in both black and white – is only listed as “coming soon” and lacks any sort of pricing. It also gets a smaller memory card than the myTouch 3G Fender Edition ; at 8GB it’s half the size.  That certainly seems to indicate that T-Mobile will be making this a more affordable device than the $179.99 Fender limited edition.  Otherwise all the specifications are seemingly the same as the first-gen T-Mobile myTouch 3G. Update: T-Mobile USA have been in touch to confirm that the new myTouch 3G is available from today, priced at $149.99 with a new agreement.  As well as the 3.5mm headphone socket it now has 288MB of memory and Swype preinstalled. Philips V900 official for China Mobile

It’s been a long time since we heard talk of a Philips Android handset, but over in China the company have just announced the Philips V900.  Headed initially to China Mobile, the V900 has a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, triband GSM/EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, and runs the OPhone Chinese Android build. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera, mini-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack, and the whole thing measures 115 x 62.4 x 13.2 mm.  What remains to be seen is whether Philips have plans to bring the V900 – or a version of it – to US or European shores.  If they do, it’ll need to throw in 3G.
